I composed Reflexos as an exercise in sound exploration and contemporary technique for the Pierrot ensemble, a group consisting of flute, clarinet, violin, cello, and piano. From the outset, my goal was to leverage the unique timbral possibilities of this ensemble to create a dialogue between modal harmony, polymodality, and chromatic modulation, generating subtle yet striking harmonic contrasts.
For approximately one minute, the piece plays with transitions between modes, parallel harmonies, and polyrhythms that enrich the texture and provide a sense of rhythmic instability. Each element is designed to evolve organically, maintaining the coherence of the musical discourse.
The melodic lines intertwine with rhythmic layers and shifting chords, creating tensions, resonances, and natural pauses within the structure. It is a brief but intense piece that condenses a wide variety of compositional resources into a compact and expressive format.
